Papagode is our samba school’s very own pagode band, playing and singing Brazilian music in its relaxed and swinging style.

Pagode, samba de mesa, partido alto, samba de raíz… the more laid-back styles of samba loved by sambistas go by many names. Compared to carnival samba, the percussion instruments used in pagode are lighter, while melodic instruments and vocals take on a central role.

The band’s mission is to grow the popularity of Brazilian music in Finland and to showcase its many styles. Their repertoire ranges from samba and its various forms to virtuosic choro instrumentals and Brazilian pop music. To the audience’s delight, they often also perform fast-paced batucada pieces from Rio’s most famous samba schools—always honoring their roots.

Founded in 2016, Papagode today features, in addition to percussion, a variety of string instruments and a brass section. The result is a truly unique group in Finland—an experience you won’t find anywhere else. Papagode brings joy and warmth to any setting, from corporate events to private parties.

Samba is an expression of Afro-Brazilian culture. The term pagode, which originally simply meant “party,” became popular in Brazil in the 1970s and 80s to describe a diverse popular music genre and the bands that performed it. Pagode is said to have been born in Brazilian backyards, where musicians would gather around a table, often with a glass of beer in hand and a wide smile on their faces.

Some of the legendary pagode groups—who play stadium-sized concerts—include Fundo de Quintal and Grupo Revelação, while Brazilian music icons such as Beth Carvalho and Zeca Pagodinho are among its most celebrated interpreters.
